TERRITORIAL
Even the most beautiful and delicate tiny birds can be fierce and violent aggressors when their territorial instincts spike. Tiny hummingbirds mount ruthless attacks against transgressors, but the sight of an alpha great blue heron chasing a male visitor, a mile around the perimeter of a lagoon, can be breathtaking. They are fast and big, and with their six-foot wingspan, the chase consumes a sizable piece of airspace. Their territory is where they hunt, feed and breed. It requires protection.
